Open Statement from Elected Representatives to the Member States of the UN General Assembly; Support for the Human Right to Water and Sanitation

We, the undersigned elected representatives,

Supporting the resolution declaring the human right to water and sanitation at the UN General Assembly

Recognizing as unacceptable that over 1.2 billion people have no access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion without access to proper sanitation

Distressed that women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of water and sanitation and that every 8 seconds a child dies from preventable water-borne disease

Concerned that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights did not explicitly recognize the human right to water and sanitation allowing some member states to reject existence of these fundamental rights

Aware that water is being severely impacted by climate change and collective action is necessary for both climate justice and water justice

Call upon member states of the UN General Assembly, and our own governments, to recognize the human right to water and sanitation.

Signed
