Canadian activist on Stern Magazine’s alternative G8 list
Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, is featured in the popular German news magazine Stern’s “guten achte” or “good eight” list along with Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangaari Mathai and founder of the Grameen Bank, Muhammad Yunnus.
On newsstands today to coincide with the meeting of G8 countries taking place in Berlin this week, the issue features prominent international figures known for their human rights achievements or philanthropic work.
A leader in the global movement for social justice, Maude Barlow was chosen for her pioneering work to promote the global right to water. The Canadian activist is working to mobilize international support for a UN convention on the right to water from governments and organizations around the world.
She is the best-selling author of 15 books including the upcoming Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Right to Water. She has received honorary doctorates from six Canadian universities for her social justice work. In 2005, she was given the prestigious “Right Livelihood Award” by the Swedish Parliament.
