A secret backroom deal with elected officials of McCloud, CA (exposed in 2003), gave Nestlé Waters privileged access to the pristine waters of Mt. Shasta, the source of water supply for McCloud and many neighboring towns. Not only was the contact period excessively long (50 years initially with an option to renew for another 49), the water was to be sold for 1/64th of a cent per gallon, a sliver of the price paid by town residents, but in the event of drought Nestlé was guaranteed its full share of water before the town folk got any.

After years of grassroots resistance Nestlé abandoned its plans in September 2009.
